Quitting my old job and starting a new one

Today marks the beginning of a new era – at least for me. I started my new job. This post will describe why I quit, how I quit and what I was looking for in a new job and my future responsibilities.

Quitting the old job

Quitting my old job was far from easy. During my (in combination of work during my studies and as a full employee) 3 years with the company, I met some really nice, motivated and intelligent people working on interesting projects. Now though it was time for something new. There of course is a factor included I will not deny: the money. It was not the main reason for me to hunt for a new job though. It was a missing concept/vision in what direction the company was going. So I quit my job by the end of January, as I had a typical for Germany 3 month notice.

As I gained friends at the old company, too, I decided to not just send them my notice of leave, but to talk to the manager in person before handing him the notice. If you know your manager and meet him regularly (I think in big companies that is not always the case) try to make an appointment and talk to him in person. For me that was not easy, though it was easier to explain a few things such as reasons of me quitting. If your team leader is not your manager, talk to him, too. I talked to three people before handing in my notice of termination of my work contract. None of them were happy, but glad to have heart it from me.

Requirements for my new job

A few requirements a company has to meet to receive my application:

  • the job should not require me to move
  • flexible working hours
  • small company in a growing market
  • interesting tasks

There were a few more things to consider, though those were the more imortant ones.

My new job

The job I started today takes me downtown Karlsruhe (Germany) and will let me work on Software for universities which is a growing market. Going downtown from where I live using public transportation gives me an extra hour per day to think about interesting stuff and write blog posts on my iPad. My office is on the top floor of an older building and I have a pretty good view of the city. The projects will be different from customer to customer and in that way stay interesting. I will work with technologies such as EJB, Glassfish, Linux and other open source tools. EJB may not sound fun to you, for me they are completely new and therefore interesting and hopefully fun to learn (using EJB 3 by the way).
